Landscapes with Rhythm with Gloria Loughman

The sky has the potential to be the most exciting element to enhance and energise any landscape. With its endless capacity for change, it is the most flexible compositional tool that you can experiment with. I have found that whatever colour palette or style I choose, when I place the sky fabric in the position of the sky in my design, it will read as sky.

Rhythm is defined as a combination of elements repeated but with variation. In this 3-day workshop we will play with repetition and pattern, decorating our sky to add movement and interest.  So, we have permission to play.

You will begin to create your sky by overpainting some interesting commercial fabrics and then decorate these areas with a series of repeated shapes. Once the sky is constructed and quilted, we will add our foreground with a number of techniques for creating landforms, areas of water, rocks, and trees outlined.

Size of class samples 80 by 60 cm.

Class Requirements

  • Bring photos, pictures, sketches, or other subject material relevant to the design of your quilt. The background needs to be quite simple with a big sky.  You may like to make a black and white enlargement of your design but remember to choose something simple.
  • Suitable black and white commercial fabrics which will be overpainted in class – Bring at least six ¼ metres with a variation of the amount of white in each design.
  • One metre of white fabric which can be painted for water or other areas of the foreground.
  • One metre of white cotton fabric for the base
  • Fabric for foreground and trees
  • Small amounts of fabric that can be used to decorate sky
  • One metre of tear away stabilizer – light weight that tears away easily.
  • Two metres of Freezer paper
  • Two metres of 24 in wide Steam a Seam 2 Lite
  • Fee for fabric paint which will be supplied in class – $8 (payable direct to teacher)

Please bring:

  • Sewing Machine in good working order, machine manual, tools and accessories including a darning foot, open toed embroidery foot and walking foot.
  • Pencil (2B), eraser, scotch tape, black medium felt tipped marker (Sharpie)
  • Large sheet of paper to draw out pattern.
  • Rotary cutter, patchwork ruler, cutting board
  • Pins
  • Chalk marking pencil – (Sewline)
  • Mathomat – if you have one or a stencil that has circles, triangles etc.
  • Threads – size 40 or 50 to match background and foreground fabrics.  Variegated threads work well. (I will have some variegated threads available for purchase in class)
  • Neutral thread for the bobbin
  • Machine needles – size 80 topstitch needles
  • Scissors fabric and paper. Small sharp scissors, tweezers
  • Quick unpick (seam ripper)
  • A few two inch or one inch foam brushes, plastic water jar, plastic plate (for painting palette), Chux for cleaning up, apron

Please bring 2 thin boards or something similar that you can lay out your wet fabric on to paint.  I have previously purchased some thin boards from Bunnings that are coated in a thin layer of white plastic, like melamine.  The boards are thin and light enough to easily carry.

Backing and Batting  – (suggested size 80 by 60 cm)

  • Batting. Thin batting such as cotton or bamboo, works well.
  • Backing fabric – one metre. This will allow you to use the same fabric for your backing and facings, to ensure a neat finish to the back of your quilt.
