Textile Bowls & Postcards with Kathryn Harmer Fox

2-Day Workshop with Kathryn Harmer Fox

Kathryn is an award-winning textile artist from South Africa who specialises in creating images by doing free motion machine embroidery and fibre embedment with scribble stitch. Her workshop in 2023 was extremely successful with students producing amazing work. The images just do not do these works of art justice. If you want to enjoy a very creative, food-for-the-soul kind of weekend, then this is the workshop for you!

Postcard Project: The postcard, reminiscent of a bygone age, is a delightful format on which to create an artwork. Choose an image from one of the multiple kits available and stitch your own A4 sized picture. ‘Write’ your message and post it to a friend, frame it, or make another.

Bowl Project: Use your domestic sewing machine like a potters’ wheel and form a bowl or platter shape. Choose an image from several kits available and stitch the picture to your bowl. These can be hung on the wall; they could be framed in a box, or set upon a flat surface. You could also stitch a lid for the shape and upon lifting, reveal an artwork. Sculpting a vessel like a bowl or a platter is a simple process on the sewing machine and is a quirky and different format for any artwork. Kathryn has made several vessels using different processes and in this workshop she will teach you how to make them from ragged cord which you shall stitch on your domestic sewing machine. One of the most delightful aspects of form shaping is that it is ever so slightly unpredictable and very easily manipulated, similar to building a clay pot on the wheel.
